About the event
Ready for an adventure that gets students excited about writing? Well, get ready to hop into your imagination and create a story filled with giggles, teamwork, and problemsolving. Students get to create (and then write!) a story about friendship where they are the main character! In this fairytale setting, imagination is everyone’s best friend. Young students often struggle to both create and write a story at the same time, and we have found this format creates stories that students are excited to share, even if it means they have to struggle through writing it all down by hand. Just like handwriting, our ability write creatively gets better the more you use it, and this workshop is set up to do just that.
This workshop balances instruction and adventure, as each 45 minute meeting is really two 20 minute sessions with a 5 minute bathroom/wiggle break in the middle. The first session will feature a short lesson about writing and give students a chance to share what they wrote since the last meeting, and the second will guide students through creating the next part of their stories. While all stories will follow the same basic storyline, each student gets to write their own interpretation of the story, making sure their character is the hero they want them to be!
Although we bill this as a creative writing workshop (and it is!) this is a great place for students to learn how to think critically, take risks, work as a team, and maybe practice a teensy bit of math (nothing adds up to more than 10, we promise!). Please note this is a Mommy & Me workshop, so parents or guardians are expected to join in on the fun, including making and playing their student’s tag-along-character. This workshop works best for students who can independently write full sentences, but may need help staying on track writing paragraphs.
